Support the Medical Device Right to Repair Act

Hospitals and other healthcare providers rely on medical equipment to treat and care for patients -- yet hospital repair technicians often have difficulty getting access to the repair information and parts they need from device manufacturers to keep equipment up and running.

These repair restrictions can delay patient procedures by hours, days or months, especially in rural areas, and put patients at risk. Furthermore, relying on manufacturers for repair increases costs that are passed onto the patient. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this long-standing problem, making Medical Right to Repair more critical than ever. The Medical Device Right to Repair Act, SB 605, would require manufacturers to provide repair parts and information at a fair and reasonable price, improving patient care and decreasing healthcare costs. Currently, medical device manufacturers heavily restrict independent equipment repair. This means many hospital repair technicians lack access to the diagnostic tools, software, and parts necessary to fix in a timely and cost-effective manner.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, access to crucial medical devices such as ventilators has never been more important. Allowing manufacturers to maintain their tight restrictions on repairs is preventing broken devices from being used, threatening patient wellbeing.

SB 605, the Medical Device Right to Repair Act, would enable on-site biomedical technicians and independent repair experts to fix these broken devices faster, and with a lower cost. This would enable many patients to access the critical treatment they need, and may otherwise be unable to receive.

With a life or death matter such as this, legislation is crucial. I urge you to protect the people of California by supporting SB 605 and establishing the Medical Right to Repair in our state.
