Tell your state lawmakers: Ban problematic plastic material

Unfortunately, plastic packaging can include material and additives linked to health harms, including cancer.

The Eliminating Problematic Plastics Act, AB 1290 by Assemblymember Luz Rivas would prohibit packaging in California from containing certain plastics and plastic additives that are hazardous to human health or make plastic packaging hard to recycle.

A coalition of major companies, including Coca-Cola and Walmart have already committed to phasing out these harmful plastic materials under the U.S. Plastics Pact. It's time for California to step up and eliminate these toxic plastic materials in our state. Tell your state lawmakers to pass the Eliminating Problematic Plastics Act.

I encourage you to vote Yes on Assembly Bill 1290 (Rivas), which prohibits packaging in California from containing certain plastics and plastic additives that are hazardous to human health or make plastic packaging hard to recycle, including:

* PVC: Polyvinyl Chloride is toxic, including links to cancer, and not recyclable
  * PFAS: Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances are 'forever' toxic chemicals harmful to people and the environment
  * Pigment Additives such as Carbon Black, which presents a lung cancer risk for workers and is not recyclable
  * Oxo-degradable Additives: Supposedly degradable plastic that actually creates microplastic pollution toxic to people and the environment
  * Pigmented PET: Pigments make this plastic hard to recycle
